Beyond the many sea-based activities in Cabo San Lucas, there is one land-based activity that particularly tempts travelers to the Mexican shores. Golfing in Cabo San Lucas is every enthusiast’s dream, with beautiful courses along the coast, the shimmering Sea of Cortez, and looming mountains in the background. This ideal environment has lead to the development of Los Cabos golf in recent decades, resulting in world-class courses at a few different resorts, and tee times are often booked far in advance to play these desirable courses. While scuba diving or snorkeling can be enjoyed any time of year, the best time for golfers to travel to Cabo is definitely from December through April. Avoiding the heat of the summer means a more enjoyable round of Cabo San Lucas golf.

The best Cabo golf courses are championship-level. Currently there are six championship golf courses in the Los Cabos area, providing an incredible variety for the golf enthusiast during a vacation to Mexico. Years ago, golf first came to the region in the form of a 9-hole course called Campo de Golf. Today, championship courses have been designed by some of the best names in golf, including Jack Nicklaus; Los Cabos golf offers 27 holes designed by Nicklaus at the famous Palmilla Resort. The development of these courses has quickly led to the skyrocketing of Cabo’s popularity on the North American golf scene, bringing in golfers from far and wide to play in this part of Baja.

Beyond the first 27 holes designed by Nicklaus, there are now two more courses of his design in Cabo, and the eighteen holes at the Eldorado Golf Club and eighteen holes at Cabo del Sol make golfing in Cabo San Lucas a real challenge. The area was envisioned to be a world-class golf resort by a man named Don Koll, a California property developer and golfer who saw the potential for Cabo and worked to develop the area. The excellence of the courses has been recognized, and since 1995 the annual PGA Senior Slam Tournament has taken place in Cabo. Los Cabos golf promises consistent weather, manicured courses, and a fantastic environment.

Cabo San Lucas golf can be intimidating and sometimes expensive, as there is a great demand to play the six championship golf courses, with price tags to match. It is evident to even novice players the skill and thought that contributed to the development of these courses. While they have similar terrain to courses in California or Arizona, golfing in Cabo San Lucas is defined by the presence of the Sea of Cortez. Varying shades of blue stretch out as far as the eye can see and are a beautiful accompaniment to a round of golf. If the heat doesn’t bother you and you’re thinking about traveling to Cabo during the summer, the area benefits from very little rain year-round, making for fine golf weather.

However, Cabo San Lucas golf doesn’t have to be expensive. Beyond the six championship courses, there are courses available to play that are more affordable and don’t need to be reserved so far in advance. The 25-mile corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo is home to a variety of courses, offering different challengers to golfers from across the world. The quality of Cabo golf has been recognized, as Golf Digest magazine has named it one of the top fifteen destinations to golf in the world. From the courses, gray whales can sometimes be seen swimming in the Sea of Cortez, creating a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience for lovers of golf.
